Our First HackathonKratzat Joe 10 04/10/14 Comments Leave your thoughts
We have always wanted to do one of these. It just sounded like a fun way to flex the creative muscles and try something new. Ultimately we had a blast and learned a lot.
As a team we performed great! We communicated well, worked together well (even during crunch time) and even presented well. As a team we couldn’t get much stronger.
This being our first hackathon we didn’t know what to expect. We weren’t sure what needed to be shown off during the demo, so we over planned. As a company we are used to taking ideas to full product, so that was our goal. Typically we are shooting for a full product, not just a demo or prototype.
We wasted time on typical production level needs: servers, deployment, etc. Looking back this cost us valuable development time. In the end we produced something we were happy to put our name on in only 9 short hours.
Next time, however, we will be ready! What we learned from this experience is that we need to simply get a demo out and forget a nice Capistrano deployment script. It isn’t needed for for the demo. We will save things like that for our real development. Next hackathon we will focus on winning. 🙂
- We had 97 commits or about 10.7 commits an hour.
